Near River Farm breeds purebred Arabian horses with a focus on amiable trainable dispositions, athletic performance, and Arabian type. Our broodmares are of some the best Polish, Polish/Crabbet, and American lines. We have found, that for us, hybridization works best for producing athletic horses with size, substance, and Arabian type.

While we don't stand a stallion currently, each year breedings are carefully thought out and a stallion chosen to complement the mare, always looking for quality and striving for improvement. We breed to produce a horse that will excel in its chosen discipline and do it beautifully year after year.

Horses are kept in small herds to develop normal equine social manners. Housing is in run-in sheds with 24/7 turnout into large paddocks with ample room to run for sound bodies and minds. For broodmares and their foals there is a barn with a large sunlit foaling stall and its own separate run-in and paddock. Besides the stone dust paddocks there are several grass paddocks for grazing with a larger pasture. To condition horses, a 150' x 135' outdoor arena was constructed a few years ago and over 50 miles of trails are directly accessed from the farm.

All foals are imprinted at birth and handled daily. Training is done here on the farm using positive reinforcement for happy, people oriented youngsters. Foals leave here knowing how to give to pressure, lead, tie, clip, trailer, stand for farrier and vet. Horses are lightly started under saddle late in their 3 year old year so they are physically mature enough and capable of carrying a rider. They're taught the basics then put up for the winter for R&R. Training begins more in earnest in their 4 year old year.

Near River Farm is owned by Steve and Nancy Russell. Nancy, with over 30 years of equine experience, personally manages the farm and breeding activities, as well as working with the foals and young horses. Steve designed and maintains the Near River and Arabian Horse Association of Massachusetts web sites and helps with the myriad of daily farm activities.

Near River Farm is located on over 11 beautiful acres of a former sheep farm in East Douglas, Massachusetts. We're located in the southern most part of Worcester County at the tri-state junction of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The farm is easily accessed by routes 146 and 395 and is just a short drive from the Worcester and Providence airports. Near River is an Arabian Discovery Farm and visitors are always welcome by appointment !
